Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 Has Started – Good Luck to all participants and all new participating countries.
Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual event which takes place across the globe every September, for the past five years.
The competition is designed to bring together people who value their local historic environment with amateur and professional photographers alike to capture images of the world’s historic monuments.
These photos are then shared with the world under free licences via Wikimedia Commons, a free media repository which amongst other things provides most of the images for Wikipedia.
Thanks.
A bit suprised though; no India in participant countries !

Yeah….no India in participating countries.
Yes because this year Pakistan is in 😀
NO United States? Why are so many countries missing this year?
One reason is missions nearly accomplished. Second is lack of interest this year!
No India this time? This when an Indian entry won last time.
Yes thats why we’re not letting do India this year otherwise it will win again ! 😛
how can I view US map to see if my photos from last year were posted I would also like to look at other photos from my area not taken by me.
Hello David Godwin,
you can use this map to look at monuments described on wikipedia : http://tools.wmflabs.org/wlm-maps red icon shows monuments missing a picture, green icons the one with monuments.
If the picture used isn’t yours it doesn’t mean your picture hasn’t been used. It can be used in another place on wikimedia sites. Best way is to go to your pictures on commons.wikimedia.org and scroll down to the section “File usage on other wikis”.
Hope this helps.
Hi this is Satish from India.
oh no ! no India this time, Damn, can’t win again now 😛
Salam,
i am from Khyber pukhtoonkhwa Pakistan. Is PAKISTAN is also in participating countries…???
Reply must…
Previously, i was left from this competition due to lack of pakistan in participating countries…
why India is left out ? its not fair . India is the only country in the world which has thousands of monuments which are worth visiting ! the number surpasses any other country in the world. it will mtake a life time to cover them all. hence india must be included in every contest so that the world becomes aware of its heritage .
Actually, India has much less monuments – but that is because the threshold to call something a ‘monument’ is in India much higher than in other countries.
The contest this year is only held in a part of the countries that participated in the past years, because the volunteers in those countries chose to put a different focus on their activities. However, it is likely they will return next year with renewed enthusiasm!

Hi!
I am an OpenStreetMap contributor and I blogged about using an OpenStreetMap-based Android App with which you can directly navigate to the cultural heritage monuments. Also I described how these can be mapped so that they appear on special Historical Maps.

Hi.
How about using pictures from Ingress game? There is a lot of monuments already with good quality photos, coordinates and description. Which are not even in Wiki. You might ask Google or players(who has rights) to get permission to use their pictures.
